Henry of Varnsdorf (+ after 1334)
Johannine priest, commander of the Zittau commandery. The results of recent research (PhDr. T. Edel) suggest that he is the long-sought author of the first Czech chronicle - the Chronicle of the so-called Dalimil.
Joseph Schubert (1757 - 1837)
composer born in Varnsdorf, author of four operas and numerous compositions for various instruments. For part of his life he worked as a court musician in Dresden.
Vincenc Pilz (1816 - 1896)
Academic sculptor born in Varnsdorf, member of the Vienna Academy of Arts, creator of many sculptures and reliefs placed in Vienna and other cities of Austria. Some of his works are located in Varnsdorf (Old Catholic church, museum).
Bjarnat Krawc (1861 - 1948)
Important Lusatian-Serbian composer, conductor and promoter of Lusatian-Serbian and Czech music. Author of compositions for choir, songs and dances on national motifs, festive masses, etc. In 1945 he moved from bombed Dresden to Varnsdorf and died there.
Hanka Krawcec (1901 - 1990)
The first professional Lusatian-Serbian artist - graphic artist and painter, excellent portraitist. Daughter of B. Krawce. Her most important work is the graphic cycle Man Should Be Light. She lived in Varnsdorf from 1947 to 1986 and is buried there next to her father. A part of the Varnsdorf museum exhibition is dedicated to the artist.
Peter Kien (1919 - 1944)
artist, poet, librettist born in Varnsdorf. His work became known many years after his death. He wrote the libretto for Viktor Ullmann's opera The Emperor of Atlantis (premiered in Amsterdam in 1977, performed in Czech on radio in 1995), and his artwork was exhibited in Terezín and in a travelling exhibition in Italian cities.
