Transport connections
The town of Varnsdorf is surrounded on three sides by the Federal Republic of Germany and since the end of the 1970s it has often been associated with the important border crossing for cars and buses to Seifhennersdorf (Federal Republic of Germany). Currently, both state roads that pass through the town are directed towards the border crossings and thus allow a high-quality and fast transport connection to the German road network. On the north-western side there is a crossing to Seifhennersdorf, which allows a direct route towards Löbau, Bautzen and Dresden, on the south-eastern side there is a crossing to Grossschönau, which leads towards Zittau, Görlitz and onwards to Poland. The connection via Seifhennersdorf to nearby Rumburk was created after many years by a renewed regular bus service, which seamlessly continued the tradition of the first R-U line from the beginning of the last century. The crossing to Grossschönau connects our town with the other districts of the Euroregion Nisa, where it goes via Germany and Poland to the Frýdlant region and the regional town of Liberec. Near both crossings, which can be used by vehicles weighing up to 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes respectively, is the A 4 motorway, which runs across Europe and can be used, for example, for a fast connection to Ostrava. The convenient location of the city allows locals and visitors to take full advantage of the freedom of the Schengen area, both for bargain shopping and especially for travel and tourism. Last but not least, we should mention the new local cycle routes with links to the official cycle paths, which allow visitors to get to know the beauty of our city and its surroundings more thoroughly.
Last but not least, the existence of border crossings also serves mutual cooperation during emergencies.
The international road I/9, which leads to the interior and is also intended for lorry traffic, and the road leading from the district town of Decin to the regional town of Usti nad Labem are the links to the interior. This direction is also used by tourists wishing to visit the nearby Bohemian Switzerland National Park and the German side of Saxon Switzerland.
A major bus carrier is the QuickBus company, providing regular daily connections with the capital.
We can't forget the passenger rail service, which has been serving the town since 1869. At present, the railway, operated by the German company Länder Bahn Trilex, is a connection with the towns of Žitava - Hrádek and Liberec, which is mainly used by tourists and students. The line passes through German and Polish territory, just like the road. Tourists also benefit from its connection to the regular steam line from Zittau to the important spa town of Jonsdorf or the large medieval castle with the picturesque town of Oybin. Inland, the railway line runs to nearby Rybniště, where it divides into lines to Děčín and Česká Lípa. The first private railway stop in the Czech Republic, which is widely used, is certainly an interesting feature - it is located at the local brewery Kocour on the line to Seifhennersdorf.
