Geographical environment
The town lies in the Mandava river basin, on the Czech side near the Lusatian Mountains and on the German side the Zittau Basin is nearby. It is one of the northernmost towns in the Czech Republic. Only other towns of the Šluknov Spur are situated further north.
It is situated at an average altitude of 332 m above sea level. The highest points of the cadastre are Špičák (544 m above sea level) and Hrádek (429 m above sea level).
The climate is based on the location of the town. Climatically, it belongs to the moderately warm, humid, hilly climatic region. The long-term average air temperature is 5.5 °C, the January average temperature is around -4.4 °C, the July average is 15.3 °C. The long-term average rainfall is 751 mm. The prevailing winds are westerly and north-westerly. Varnsdorf, due to the prevailing wind directions, lies in a significantly windward position of the Lusatian Mountains. In relation to the wind direction, the possibility of fog formation is reduced and thus the occurrence of inversion situations. The watershed of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea is located on the territory of the town, more precisely in the Studánka area.
The cadastral area of the town is 26,21 km2. Of this area, 10,9 km2, i.e. 41,7 %, is agricultural land and 15,3 km2, i.e. 58,3 %, is non-agricultural land. Of the total area of non-agricultural land, 63,3 % is forest land. Forests mainly cover the top positions of terrain waves. Spruce is an important forest tree species.
Meadows and pastures predominate in the structure of agricultural land with a share of 66 %, whereas arable land accounts for only 9,9 %.
The territory of the town consists of 3 parts (Studánka, Světliny, Varnsdorf) and is also divided into 24 urban districts. During the 1991 census of population, houses and flats, the town was divided into 50 census districts. At the time of the elections it is divided into 13 electoral districts.
