Labour market

The employment rate of the inhabitants of Varnsdorf has always been considerable and was among the highest not only in the Šluknov region, but also in comparison with the cities of the Czech Republic. This was due to the economic base, which offered considerable involvement of women.

At the time of the 1991 census, there were 9,072 economically active persons in the town, representing 55.8% of the total population and 92% of the working-age population. The number of economically active men was 4665, i.e. 59.5% of the total population and 91.8% of the working age population. The high supply of opportunities for women was reflected in the fact that there were 4,407 economically active women, representing 52.3% of the total population.

Social changes after 1990 have affected the economic base in the city. Although on the one hand the supply of employment opportunities in the tertiary sector, i.e. mainly in trade and services, has increased, on the other hand, there has been a decline in some productive capacities and thus a decrease in employment opportunities. Developments in the labour market reflect the situation of the economic base. Until 1995, the unemployment rate was low, at 4,0 %. The absolute figure shows that at the end of 1995 there were 364 registered jobseekers. Unemployment increased in the following years. At the end of 1999, there were already 1 079 jobseekers registered in the town, of whom 520 were women. The year-on-year increase in the number of unemployed was the highest in 1999 (by 336 applicants).

The unemployment rate was 11.9%, having risen by 3.7 percentage points in 1999. The majority of jobseekers are both under 24 years of age and over 45 years of age. Unskilled persons are finding it increasingly difficult to find work. In terms of education, the unemployed are dominated by persons with primary education (38.5 %) and apprenticeships (43.2 %). The length of time applicants have been registered with the labour office is gradually increasing. Almost one fifth of them have been registered for more than 1 year.
