Administrative district ORP

The administrative district of Varnsdorf is the smallest administrative district in the Ústí nad Labem Region. Its area is less than 90 km2, which represents 1.7% of the region's area. However, its population density of 231 inhabitants/km2 ranks it 4th among all 16 administrative districts of municipalities with extended competence in the region. The overwhelming majority of the population, 77%, lives in the settlement town.

It borders the Federal Republic of Germany, the Liberec Region and the administrative districts of Decin and Rumburk. The border crossing with Germany Varnsdorf - Seifhennersdorf is located here.

The Varnsdorf administrative district includes the Lusatian Mountains Protected Landscape Area, the Elbe Sandstone Protected Landscape Area, the Bohemian Switzerland National Park and several nature reserves. You can find here, for example, the ruins of Tolštejn Castle near Jiřetín pod Jedlovou or the granite hill Křížová cesta with a chapel and the Way of the Cross. The village of Jiřetín pod Jedlovou is known for its mining industry, mainly silver, copper, tin and lead were mined here. You can find here open shafts. Later, mining was replaced by the textile industry and tourism. A stone lookout tower rises on the Jedlová mountain (770 m above sea level). The attractive surroundings and protected areas, dominated by the Lusatian Mountains, offer many opportunities for hiking and cycling.

The industrial town of Varnsdorf is surrounded on three sides by the border with the Federal Republic of Germany. Machine tools are manufactured here and there are also several companies involved in textile production. Its cultural monuments include the oldest building, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, and the highly visible pseudo-Romanesque Church of St. Francis of Assisi. In the outskirts of the town and along the Mandava River, a number of folk buildings, the so-called "podstávka houses" from the 18th and 19th centuries, have been preserved, which show the way and style of life of simple peasants, farmers and craftsmen. There is a museum in the town where various occasional exhibitions are held. Varnsdorf is an important economic centre of the Czech part of the Neisse-Nisa-Nysa Euroregion, which was founded in 1991 and brings together towns and villages in the border areas of Germany and Poland.
